Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation, [se'lenakinta'nija'peres]; April 16, 1971-March 31 1995) Also known as Selena, is a famous American Tejano performer. Her contribution to fashion and music have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most famous performers of the Mexican-American community of the late 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in the third spot on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and Latin chart of songs. Because of her clothing choices, media outlets called her the Tejano Madonna. Her choices in clothing also makes her among the most renowned Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she often was dismissed and had to be denied bookings at venues across Texas for singing Tejano music, which was a genre that was dominated by males. However, her popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She won nine times consecutively. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Her debut album was self-titled and released in the year following. Her brother became her primary music producer as well as songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) reached the top spot at one in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight months in a row. The album's commercial success has led critics to label it the "breakthrough" recording of her musical career. "Como la Flor" was one of the album's singles became her most beloved hit song. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of America's top Latin albums. Critically, it was credited with initiating Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It was one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
